This video by Avril Lavigne, titled "Alice", is a great example of how dreams work and their characteristics.  Freud references Delboeuf, who says that "dreams keep their mental faculties (except perception)- intelligence, imagination, memory, will and morality- remain essentially intact: they are merely applied to the imaginary and unstable objects."  In the video, Avril is suddenly dressed in a black dress fit for a princess, and she is in the middle of a beautiful forest with huge mushrooms everywhere.  In the book, Freud says that a dream "pictures earthly beauty to our eyes in a truly heavenly splendor and clothes dignity with the highest majesty".  Also, some of Avril's lyrics include the phrases "tripping out spinning around, I'm underground, I fell down...I found myself in Wonderland...Is this real?  Is this pretend?"  Freud says in the first chapter that dreams can be made from past memories and experiences, which is why they can sometimes seem extraordinarily real and surreal at the same time.
